Synopsis:
Bruce Willis travels into the past to save his future, or maybe he’s just
fucked in the head.
Review:
12 Monkeys is a smart film, and that's what makes it so good. I don't
know what it is about Gilliam's films, but they're always money (for the
record, I like "The Fisher King" best). Most people chalk it up to his
visual style, but that's not it. There's something more. Whatever it is,
keep'em coming brother.
I also have to give
props to Bruce Willis for his work in this film. Hand’s down, this is
the best performance he's ever delivered. It's too bad he moved onto films
like Armageddon afterwards; he's clearly capable of so much more. And
lets not for get Mr. Pitt, after all the motherfucker got nominated for
the best supporting actor Oscar for this movie.
Special Features :
This motherfuckers stacked! Finally a "Collector's Edition" that's worth
collecting. Here's what you get with this shiny little disc; the theatrical
trailer, a commentary track (featuring Gilliam & Producer Charles Roven),
production notes, an 8 panel fold-out booklet, cast & crew bio's and a
"Making of" documentary. Do you like apples?
The theatrical trailer
is money, but the booklet is a little lean (there’s only 2 pages of writing).
The production notes basically cover the same material as the commentary
track and the documentary, but it goes into more detail about where things
were shot and why. Likewise the cast & crew bio’s were fairly extensive.
Along with each person’s particulars you get their respective fimography
(holy fuck Christopher Plummer been in a lot of movies!).
But the commentary
track and the documentary are what makes this DVD a must have. The feature
length commentary by Gilliam and Roven is very entertaining because not
only do they comment about making this film but also about their experiences
in the movie industry. Take my word for it, it’s well worth the time to
listen to these two gentlemen preach their gospel.
Clocking in at hour
& half, "The Hamster Factor and other Tales of 12 Monkeys" (the documentary)
is a fucking monster. Covering everything from post-production to opening
night, this is the best "making of" I’ve ever seen. Props to Keith Fulton
& Louis Pepe the bad-asses behind this motherfucker.
How do you like them apples?
Video and Audio:
The Audio and visual quality on this DVD is great. I couldn't see any
problems with the video transfer and the Dolby 5.1 is cleaner then a virgin's
honey-pot (sorry, I just finished watching Shawshank again).
I'm going to be a
bitch and pick 2 best lines for this DVD.
"5 thousand dollars,
5 thousand dollars". –Brad Pitt
"It's important to
keep control (while directing). That's my...personally, my biggest fear
is that one puts oneself in a vulnerable position where the Studio or
whoever can come in…usually very nervous, frightened people any…with no
particular talents and make the final choices. You see it happen on so
many films, and then…the only advantages of those is the director later…
you know 10 years later can release the Director's Cut, and say that was
his. Which I resent enormously, because if you put your name on the film,
and you’re the Director, that’s your cut. And if you don't think that's
your cut, if that's not the film you set out to make, then don't put your
name on it. And yet, they have the benefit of being able to make Director's
Cuts, mine are what you see…that’s the end of it". - Terry Gilliam (from
the commentary track)
