Synopsis:
A day in the life of a couple of slackers.
Review:
Although widely considered to be the poorest of Kevin Smith’s 4 films,
I liked Malltrats. Sure the story’s light compared to Chasing Amy, but
this isn’t a story about a hetero – homo – lesbian love triangle, so fuck
off.
Don’t get me wrong,
I’m not saying that Mallrats is anything on par with…oh say…Shakespeare,
but it’s good for shits and giggles. Just see the fucking movie.
Special Features :
This disc is stacked like a motherfucker. The View Askew look back at
the making of Mallrats was fairly comprehensive. Presented by Kevin Smith
and Scott Mosier, this feature is basically a making of. It’s well worth
the time if you liked the movie.
The commentary track
featuring Smith, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, and Scott Mosier
is the shit. These guys spend more time busting each other’s balls than
they do commenting on the movie, which was great. The only thing that
really blew was that visual feature on this commentary was only used about
4 times throughout the whole movie.
The real fucking pisser
is that one of the guy’s does a visual imitation of somebody (sorry I
didn’t go looking for who) but the alternate angle video option isn’t
on. Why the fuck did they bother with this feature? Use you’re fucking
heads next time, Jag-offs.
The deleted scene
section was really extensive, but I wouldn’t say that it’s really worth
the time to watch the entire original intro to the film (clocking in at
around half an hour it’s a bit much). The remaining cut scene’s are nothing
special, but that’s why they were they cut.
The production notes
provide more background info on the making of the movie, if you didn’t
get enough info from every other feature on this disc, personally I thought
it was over-kill. The Cast and Filmmakers section provided more info on
the actor’s and Kevin Smith. I guess if you find this shit entertaining
it’s worth your time, but I found it boring.
The picture gallery
was shit, but hey aren’t they always? The sound track presentation was
comprised of a commercial for the sound track and a music video. Watch’em
if you want, but neither of the 2 was very interesting.
Lastly, the Web links.
I don’t have a DVD-ROM so all you motherfuckers will have to check this
shit out for yourselves.
Video and Audio:
The boys over at Universal did a good job; I didn’t see any problems with
the video transfer. And the Dolby 5.1 does a stand up job too.
