Synopsis: James Stewart is Scottie Ferguson, an acrophobic detective
hired by his friend to follow his suicidal wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak).
Scottie soon falls for this chick; she is after all a hot blonde. Tragedy
strikes Scottie after this hot chick dies. The man is just roaming the
streets, when he notices another chick that looks a lot like Madeleine.
Finding this other chick compels Scottie to unravel the secrets of the
past.
Review: This was a great movie to watch. The story unfolds a wee bit
too slow, but I won't complain about that cuz of the time it was made.
James Stewart plays a very believable part even though he always seems
to be staring in a Woody Allen movie. Kim Novak, who is a fox and she
knows it, plays a wonderful role. Even though she wasn't the lady Hitchcock
wanted. All said this was a great story fit to be associated with Hitchcock.
Special Features: There was a ton on stuff on this DVD, but it was clear
that all the material was ripped off the laser disc. Even the chapter
list on the booklet read side 1, side 2. But there is no side 2. Someone
got lazy over at universal. Back to the features, the commentary was excellent
with Herbert Coleman. It was entertaining and informative. Well worth
the time to listen to. The featurette was also a nice touch. Although
I felt it was just the restoration guys saying how cool they are. And
we all know they aren't. The disc also includes the standard trailer and
production notes nothing too amazing to talk about there.
Audio: The sound on this disc is outstanding. The musical mix is great
coming out strong but never over powering the dialogue. The movie was
helped a great deal by the soundtrack. Giving just the right amount at
the proper time. So crank it up and feast on the splendid job the boys
did on the audio track.
Video: Obviously the restoration boys did a real number here. They worked
on this bad boy for 2 years. So you can bet the picture is outstanding
considering how old this movie is and what they had to work with. Still
there are some shots where even they admit are faded. Oh well, maybe next
time, you slackers!
Bottom line you should pick up this movie. I bought the set, which included
Psycho, and a disc of Hitchcock presents. A decent buy considering the
price of the set was the same as buying both movies and you get an extra
disc. Which is always important if you're an addict, like me.
